The basis point is symbolically represented similar to the percentage sign (%) just with two extra zeros in the denominator. One basis point or 1 bps is equal to 0.01%. Basis points are very useful while dealing with calculations regarding finances and it easily converts the given percentage value to a standard basis point value. Example 1: Find the basis points for 0.05 percentage points. Given are percentage points equal to 0.05% According to the definition, 1 basis point = 1/100 percentage point. So, for the conversion of percentage points to basis points the percentage points are multiplied by 100. 1 percentage point = 100 * basis points Hence 0.05 percentage points = 0.05 * 100 basis points = 5 basis points. Therefore the answer is 0.05 percentage points equals 5 basis points. Example 2: Find the basis points for 0.3 percentage points. Given are percentage points equal to 0.3% According to the definition, 1 basis point = 1/100 percentage points. 5 Practical Strategies for Combating Boredom in Kids with ADHD Many kids with ADHD struggle with feelings of boredom throughout the day, especially during activities that fail to meet their high mental engagement needs (see my previous post for more on this topic). When boredom kicks in, kids feel miserable and their ability to stay focused and engaged plummets. While every hour of every day cant be filled with fun and exciting activities, there are many strategies that parents and teachers can use to make everyday tasks more engaging for kids with ADH, 5 Key Strategies for Reducing Boredom and Increasing Engagement Make Activities Meaningful When an activity is meaningful to a child, either because it is helping him or her to improve skills in an area that is important or because it is tied to a topic that he or she enjoys, his or her interest and enthusiasm will increase dramatically. For example, many kids with ADHD complain that math is boring, but when a child learns to use his or her skills to predict the scoring potential of a favorite athlete, math suddenly becomes much more interesting. Or when a child learns that getting through homework quickly (and accurately) means that he or she will finish sooner and have more time to play a favorite game, he or she becomes much more engaged and less distracted during homework time. Incorporate Physical Activity Physical activity provides essential mental stimulation for kids with ADHD, and can make typically boring activities much more engaging. Physical activity can come in the form of a hands-on project, an opportunity to complete assignments while standing and fidgeting rather than sitting still, or frequent pre-planned activity breaks. In an ideal scenario, active games can be used to teach new skills, routines, and habits. Whenever activities are fun and game-like boredom quickly disappears! Keep it Short Kids with ADHD become bored with almost any lengthy task. For very young children, even a 10-minute activity can induce boredom. Older children may have a 20-minute limit before the boredom sets in. In general, helping kids with ADHD learn new skills and complete everyday tasks through short bursts of activity will reduce boredom and increase engagement. Try reducing the length of repetitive academic assignments, and breaking down longer activities, like cleaning up a very messy play area, into smaller chunks. Set Short-Term Goals Most kids with ADHD find activities boring when they lack a clear purpose or have a very delayed outcome. Build small goals into activities to bump up engagement. For example, rather than having a child passively listen to a book report presentation in class, have him or her complete a worksheet that requires him or her to listen for very specific details during the presentation. Challenge the child to have an answer written down for each question before the presenter has finished the report. Reward Progress Providing immediate rewards can make almost any activity more engaging for kids with ADHD. In general, rewards should be immediate, they should be something that the child wants to earn, and they should be used sparingly. Rewards are powerful tools for kids with ADHD, but when they are used too frequently they can be difficult to sustain. In addition, they may undermine a childs internal motivation when they are paired with activities that the child perceives as easy or inherently interesting. So, build in rewards when they are needed, but use them only after youve tried one or more of the four strategies listed above. Anytime an otherwise boring activity can be made engaging for a child with ADHD he or she will receive a boost in his or her ability to focus, be productive, and feel proud of his or her efforts. Its not possible to escape boredom altogether, but with a few tips and tricks most activities can be made interesting for kids with ADHD. ABOUT DR. Cracking the ACT Science Section Tips for the ACT Science Section   Unlike the SAT, the ACT has a science reasoning section. However, nothing about this section has much to do with science. This section is essentially part reading comprehension, part logic, and part identifying patterns. Since counting numbers is technically math, the science reasoning section is really just an extension of the reading and math sections (READ: ACT Tips From a Private Irvine Tutor). Many students find this section to be overwhelming because they werent expecting to be tested on science. However, students who will be taking the ACT sometime in 2014 or 2015 need not worry about this. Take a look at these few steps to success on the ACT science reasoning section. One â€" Learn to see past all of the numbers that you dont need. The charts and graphs are full of different numbers, many of them with multiple commas or decimal points meant to confuse you. Students who have a great deal of focus will have better success on this section. I simply mean focus as in focusing in on one small set of numbers (READ: Ask a Nerd! SAT Subject Tests). Two â€" Look for patterns. If you generally have a little bit of extra time on your practice exams, then try to spend a minute or two looking at the two different charts or graphs and look for patterns ahead of time. This might help you find the right answer more quickly once you read the questions. However, if you find that pacing is an issue, look for the number patterns only after you have read the questions and discover which part of the chart and graph that you need to look at. Three â€" Annotate the paragraphs. Oddly enough, the paragraphs in the science reasoning section can be approached in a similar way that students would in order to solve the SAT long reading passages. This is unusual because theyre not only to different exams but there are two different sections on the exams. However, the science reasoning section has a bunch of information that you simply dont need; it is there to confuse you and make your life harder as a student. It is a college entrance exam after all so its not going to be easy. Your job is to quickly and efficiently annotate these paragraphs and either box or circle information that you need or cross out the information that you dont. Four â€" Try reading the questions before reading the paragraphs. Many students struggle with finishing each section on time. The ACT doesnt give you a ton of time to finish the amount of questions that are required. Thus, it is important to make sure that youre not spending too much time on one chart or graph or on one set of questions. If you read the questions before reading a paragraph you may find that you actually didnt have to read the entire passage in the first place. This could save a student anywhere between three and seven minutes depending on how quickly they can skim and comprehend a passage (READ: Ask a Nerd! Are the SAT and ACT Similar?). Five â€" Use common sense. Many students take a practice exam and end up disappointed with their score. Later, when they go back and look at the answers that they got wrong, they discover that they almost picked the right answer. Its very easy for students to think that the test is much harder than it actually is. This makes sense because teachers, tutors, and parents stress the importance of this test night and day. However, the ACT wants you to pick a trick answer; in reality sometimes the most straightforward and simple choice ends up being the correct answer.
